During the bitter-sweet road-trip of moving my daughter to college, I slammed on the brakes when crossing a bridge and yelled “camalotes!” making wife and daughter jump out of their seats. Although it’s not the correct Spanish word for Water Lilies it’s what came to mind in excitement when I saw these majestic plants floating in the water. Just like everything in Texas, they were big and by the thousands covering most of the lake surface. Though nymphaea look as if they are sprouting from the water, they are actually floating on top of the water, with their roots tethered deep into the water-logged soil at the bottom of the lake. Pretty much how I feel standing on the ground with the bird above helping me capture the beauty of this world.
